In addition to promoting fun and friendship, the Northern Virginia Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi also supports several philanthropic activities through volunteerism and fundraising. Whether it's participating in a project activity at a general meeting or volunteering on your own, there are numerous opportunities for you to get involved.

In 1998 the NVAC established the Arrow Foundation to manage all funds raised by the Club for charity and to coordinate local and national philanthropic contributions (see below). The Arrow Foundation also provides a scholarship to Alumna of Pi Beta Phi taking continuing education courses. For more information, visit scholarship.

NVAC Local Philanthropies:

The Reading Connection
Pi Beta Phi Fraternity has been committed to education and literacy since the founding of the Settlement School in 1910. In 1990 the Fraternity established Links to Literacy to provide a service opportunity for members. The Northern Virginia Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi supports the Fraternity's Links to Literacy efforts through our volunteer and financial assistance to The Reading Connection. The Reading Connection is a local literacy outreach program for children living in D.C. metro area homeless shelters. The Reading Connection encourages a love of books by reading aloud to children, offering them access to high-quality books and giving them age-appropriate books to keep.

NVAC members read to the children, donate books and school supplies to the shelters, and prepare welcome bags filled with books, bookmarks and school supplies.

Arlington Pediatric Center
The Arlington Pediatric Center provides outpatient medical care for infants, children and adolescents who reside in Arlington households with incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level ($35,300 for a family of four). From a library of donated and gently-used books, every child who attends an appointment chooses a book to take home, as do any accompanying siblings.

Pi Beta Phi National Philantropies

Pi Beta Phi promotes literacy through it philanthropic efforts. During our February club meeting, Kyle Zimmer came to speak to our club about First Book. Our club supports First Book through the proceeds of our foundation events and club member donations.

First Book is an award winning non-profit mission with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.  First Book has provided more than 50 million new books to children in need in thousands of communities.

First Book provides a critical resource to children in need.  Over 80% of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age appropriate books and other print material.  First Book supports the hardest to reach children and elevates the quality of the programs that serve them. The children served by First Book are found in existing programs across the country such as youth centers, housing projects, pediatric clinics, day care centers and other community-based initiatives serving children in need.

First Book's National Book Bank is the first-ever centralized system that enables publishers to donate large quantities of new books and educational materials to the nonprofit sector for distribution to children from low-income families.

The first book marketplace revolutionizes the way community-based programs teach our country's hardest-to-reach children by offering award-winning books for an average of just $1.80 per book.  The Marketplace sells cartons of high quality titles exclusively to community programs serving disadvantaged children.
